Why You Should Have an Engagement Session

November 17, 2021 · In: Engagement

If you’re recently engaged, you might be wondering if you need an engagement session. Perhaps your photographer is offering one in their package or you’re thinking of adding one on. We’re here to tell you that an engagement session is a great idea! There are a few reasons why an engagement session is worth your time and investment.

Get to know your photographer

We’ve written before about finding a photographer that you love. Whether you’ve already chosen someone or you want to see how one photographer operates, an engagement session is a great opportunity to get to know them and how they work as a photographer. You’ll get a sense of how they do or don’t pose you and whether or not they make you feel comfortable. It’s always a good idea to spend time with your chosen photographer.

An engagement session also allows them to get to know you as a couple. They can better understand your dynamics for your wedding day.

Get an idea of what your wedding photos will look like

Similar to getting to know your photographer, an engagement session is an opportunity to see how your photographer edits and what shots they typically pick. You also have a chance to give them feedback before your wedding day. If there’s something from your engagement session that you don’t like, you can communicate that and save yourself (and your photographer) some hassle down the road.

Practice in front of a camera

Most of us don’t spend a lot of time in front of a camera, and it can be awkward at first. You want to be as comfortable as possible on your wedding day. An engagement session can get rid of some of those nerves. You can also practice poses to see what you like best.

Have some great pictures of the two of you

Sure, you might have some great selfies, but there’s nothing like professional photos that showcase you as a couple. These are the kind of photos you can put on your save the dates or use on your wedding website. It’s also nice to get some ring shots and just have a great photo session of the two of you before you get married.

An engagement session is basically like a practice run for your wedding photos. It helps you get a better sense of what your wedding day will be like and how your photos will look. Check with your photographer to see if one is included in your package or how much it would be to add one. It’s definitely worth it.
